Play Ball! The Saint Louis Cardinals Meet the Houston Astros

Game Date: Tuesday, September 25, 2012
Game Start: 7:05 p.m.

Of course, you already know that Richard and I got to Houston insanely early (3:30) so as soon as the gates opened, we went inside and found our seats. As you can see, the stadium was pretty empty. We were in Section 113, about another five or ten rows in front of the lady in pink. They were great seats.

The Cardinals were out on the field, practicing. We got to watch them lob hit after hit toward the outfield.

It was fun watching the players chill out before the game, when they were not batting or in the outfield fielding the balls.

This fan made us laugh...he spent a lot of money on a Pujols jersey at some time in the past, then Albert Pujols, the best first baseman ever, became a free agent and went to the Los Angeles Angels, last year. Looking at the back of this fan's jersey, I would say that he was not happy with Pujols.

Richard was really hoping that he might get a chance to take home one of the balls hit into the stadium. If you look in the top background, you can see many people lined up against the railing, waiting for a chance to snag a ball, also. Well, a ball came zinging right at us, but the guy in front of us got it and gave it to his little boy. I am sure he will treasure his baseball. Next time we go, maybe it will be our turn to catch the stray ball.

Once the game started, we forgot all about the long drive, and the long wait. We just enjoyed ourselves. The Astros watched the Cardinals from their dugout, as the Red Birds (slang for the Cardinals, who are also called the Cards), hit another one into the outfield.

Once the game started, the hawkers started going up and down the aisles, calling out their wares. This man is selling popcorn for $3.75, and the man behind him is selling peanuts for $4.50. You could also buy beer in a metal bottle for $7.50, or margaritas for $12.50. We got a bottle of cold water for $4.00.

The Cardinal's star pitcher, Adam Wainwright, watches the game with another Cardinal (I don't know who he is.)

The Astros' third base coach signals to a runner.

In between innings, a group of guys pulled boards across the dirt to straighten it up. You don't see that on tv because that is when they show the commercials.

Between innings, there is usually something going on beside the game to keep the fans watching the field. This event is called "Stealing Third Base," and some lucky child is allowed to run onto the field to pull up the third base plate and take it home.

The Astros' pitchers tried to shut down the Cards, but they were unsuccessful.

Here are Cardinals runners leading off while they watch the batter. The Cardinals' third base coach is watching, too.

The final score was Cardinals - 4, and the Astros-0. It sure is nice to see your team win! Now, we are already looking forward to next year. The 2013 schedule shows the Cardinals coming to Houston in June. Whoo-hoo!!!!
