Art Deco in Seguin Architecture
Seguin's Municiple Building located on North River Street.
Oh, yes, this is a beauty. But did you miss some other Art Deco pieces?
The Court House is another fine work, by the same team of architects, Lewis Wirtz and Harold Calhoun. Even more than the Municipal Building, it has evolved from pure Deco toward Art Moderne. Or some would say its style is WPA Moderne, after the federal agency that supplied the funds, creating jobs in the depth of the Depression.
Calhoun was just out of Rice when he joined up with Lewis Wirtz. He's credited with the bas relief of the city's seal, far above the City Hall entrance, as well as the reliefs of Justice and Wisdom over the Court House doors.
Another fine Art Deco Building is the former bathhouse at Max Starcke Park. It was remodeled to serve as Parks Dept offices, but the exterior remains much as it was. Robert H.H. Hugman, "The Father of the River Walk", designed this building and Starcke Park before construction began on San Antonio's River Walk.
There's also two Art Deco/Moderne houses in town, one on College St across from the library, the other on the corner of Mountain & Cherry Sts.
I hope you will continue to photograph Seguin's under-appreciated architectural richness.
